Alysse Medina

January 2009

The VLP is pleased to announce

that Alysse Medina (pictured at

right with student coordinator,

Jillian Aja) has been chosen as

our Outstanding Law Student

Volunteer for January.  Alysse

is a third year law student at the

U of A and has been participating

in the Guardianship Clinic this

semester.   Alysse excelled in

this clinic, exuding professionalism, skill and confidence.  She was extremely

thorough in her review of each client’s case and magnificently handled any

‘surprises’ that came up.  Alysse is so at ease in the courtroom that she

appears to be a natural born litigator.  She was truly impressive to watch

and the VLP is very grateful to have had her be a part of our program.

Alysse is originally from Phoenix, AZ but decided to attend the U of A as an

undergraduate.  She graduated magna cum laude in 2006 with a Bachelor’s

degree in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration.  Fortunately

for us, she decided to continue on as a Wildcat.  During her two and a half years

at the law school, Alysse has not only been an incredible volunteer but she’s

also been active in the school’s Law Women’s Association and Latino Law

Student’s Association.  Alysse has enjoyed many of her classes, but just

recently found her favorite professor when she took Bankruptcy Reorganization

with Adjunct Professor Rob Charles.  Alysse says that she “really liked how

he presented the material.  He took a practical application approach to the

material but was still able to illustrate how all the pieces fit together within

the bankruptcy system.”

We asked Alysse what she feels is the most important thing she has learned

from volunteering with the VLP and she replied with a very astute answer.  “I

guess VLP just reiterated that nothing is always normal.  Guardianship seemed

like a straight forward clinic but many different situations would arise making it

fun to see how a general law can apply to so many different people.”

Alysse is a self-described TV addict.  She regularly tunes into Gossip Girl,

House, and Top Chef, and she further admits that “sadly, I would probably

watch anything.”  She is also an admitted sugar junkie, therefore, her dream

job would be working as a baker or being the founder of Sprinkles.  And when

Alysse just needs to get away, she heads to her parents’ cabin in Payson,

Arizona.  ”It is the best in winter because there is tons of snow but it is also

a great escape in the summer because it is always in the seventies.  I love it!

In fact, I wish I was there now.”
