Meaghan Kramer
July 2009
For the month of
July, the VLP
is pleased to
announce Meaghan
Kramer as our
Outstanding Law
Student Volunteer.
As a 1L, Meaghan
has volunteered in
a variety of clinics,
including our
Domestic Relations Clinic
and Child Support
Project. Meaghan’s
professionalism,
exceptional hard work
and dedication as
a volunteer make her
an easy choice as
this month’s
outstanding
student.
As she prepares
for her second year at the Rogers College of Law at the U of A,
Meaghan has
already recognized the benefits of volunteering. “I’ve found that
the
VLP was the best
way to actually put my legal education to good use as a 1L.
Volunteering is an
important part of leading a balanced life,” she said. “The hours
I volunteered were
some of the most interesting and rewarding of my first year.”
At the same time,
Meghan has seen that volunteering can come at a price. “I’ve
learned that all
volunteers are busy people; the students, the lawyers, the legal
aid staff.”
Meaghan herself though, is probably well-acquainted with a busy
schedule.
Originally from
Casa Grande, she graduated from the U of A’s Eller College of
Management with a
BS in Public Administration in May 2008. While there,
Meaghan was
involved in a wide range of groups and activities, including serving
as the Executive
Board President of the U of A Panhellenic Council, receiving
recognition as the
Greek Woman of the Year, working as a research assistant
at the Honors
College, interning with Project Vote Smart, and being a member
of both the Public
Administration Honor Society and Arizona Ambassadors.
Meaghan’s
activities and accolades have not slowed since entering law school.
This year, she won
first place in the Richard Grand Legal Writing Competition,
sat on the Legal
Writing Advisory Committee, Lawyers for Literacy, and
Community Service
Board, as well as served as the Communication Chair of
the Law Women’s
Association and Self Service Center Clinic Coordinator with
our program.
For Meaghan
though, the busyness is certainly not for busyness’ sake. “If the
busy people didn’t
give a few hours a week, there would be no help for all those
who desperately
need it” she said. “I love thinking back to all of the clients I
have worked with
throughout the past year. VLP provides an awesome service
to Southern
Arizona and it’s great that students got to be a part of it.”
After her first
year, Meghan loved all of her professors, but cited Professor Ellen
Bublick as a
standout. “She was wonderful!” Meaghan said, “She is passionate
about the material
and that really draws you in as a student.”
Even with all of
her responsibilities, she somehow still finds time to read, play
tennis, watch Cash
Cab, enjoy the B-Line Café and travel to places like Magens
Bay in St. Thomas.
Next to the beautiful Caribbean scenery and climate, its
appeal may also
have something to do with its name. “It’s like my own personal
beach!”
