Pat Sandor
March 2009
The VLP is pleased
to announce
that Pat Sandor
has been selected
as our Outstanding
Law Student
Volunteer for the
month of March
2009. Pat is a
first year law student
at the U of A and
is currently
participating in
the Domestic
Relations Clinic
this semester.
Pat has excelled
in this Clinic
and has been a
pleasure to work
with. Pat has
never shown a hint
of nervousness and
has absorbed
a lot of family
law knowledge in a
very short time.
His confidence
soothes clients
and helps them believe that they can handle their legal issues on
their own. Pat is
an exemplary volunteer and a true asset to our legal
community.
Pat is a native of
Scottsdale, AZ. As an undergrad he moved clear across the
county to attend
Amherst College in Massachusetts where he received a
Bachelor of Arts
in Political Science and Spanish in 2007. While at Amherst,
Pat played varsity
football and lacrosse and volunteered with Difference for
Developmentally
Disabled, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Educate!, and Project
Survival. After
graduation, Pat spent a full year in Spain teaching English to
children and
adults and as a result is now a fluent Spanish speaker – a skill
that has come in
very handy while assisting VLP clients. This experience
seems to have
created a desire to land an international job as Pat says that
his dream job is
to become an ambassador to a foreign country.
Pat chose to
become involved with VLP because he believes:
That VLP is a perfect way
to get involved with the community; it
matches people who are
truly in need with those who are genuine in
their interest to serve.
VLP is also valuable both to those who receive
the service and those who
provide it, in that it provides a practical way
in which students can
learn the law.
His experiences
with the VLP and in law school have altered his view of the law.
Pat says he has
“begun to realize just how pervasive the legal system is in our
community. I now
notice the law in places that I didn’t see before.” One
professor that has
helped Pat develop a better understanding of the law is
Professor Robert
Glennon. Pat says Professor Glennon “really finds a way
to make Con. Law
interesting and applicable (not to mention his morning stand-
up act).”
When asked what he
feels is the most important thing he has learned from
volunteering with
the VLP, Pat replied “being a successful lawyer isn’t just
about who
understands the law best. Because clients often just want to “tell
their story,” a
successful attorney must also be understanding, patient, and
a good listener.”
In his spare time,
Pat is a very active guy and likes to relax by snowboarding,
surfing, reading,
golfing, trying new restaurants and traveling. He does take a
break from all
that activity from time to time to catch Top Chef and
SportsCenter.
