Nathan Mee
May 2009
The VLP is pleased
to announce that
Nathan Mee has
been selected as our
Outstanding Law
Student Volunteer for
the month of May
2009. Nathan is a
third year law
student at the U of A and
participated in
the Bankruptcy Reaffir-
mation Clinic this
semester. Nathan
has excelled in
this Clinic and has been
a pleasure to work
with. He is extremely
professional and
relates well to the clients.
His confidence and
courtroom manner
has impressed
clients, judges, volunteer
attorneys and VLP
staff alike. Nathan’s dedication to the program and
willingness to
volunteer made him an easy choice for this award.
Nathan is
originally from Phoenix, Arizona. He attended Connecticut College
and received his
Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Latin American
Studies in 2003.
While at Connecticut, Nathan spent a semester abroad in
Argentina.
Immersion into the Argentinean culture helped Nathan to become
fluent in Spanish
and also left him with a favorite vacation destination. He
describes
Patagonia, Argentina as “stunning and unlike anywhere else on
Earth.” After
Connecticut College, Nathan attended the Thunderbird School
of Global
Management and obtained his MBA. He was a standout student
while at
Thunderbird receiving the Barton Kyle Yount Award, the President’s
Circle Award and
was selected to be a commencement speaker at his
graduation.
Nathan became involved
with VLP because he was “looking
for a way to
volunteer where I could
use the skills I learned in business school and law
school.” One of the
professors that he feels he has learned the most from
in law school is
Professor David Marcus. Nathan says “his passion for
teaching and the law is
contagious, and he is one of the nicest and smartest
people I know. He
is also one of the funniest.” Nathan’s experiences with
the VLP and in law
school have completely changed his view of the law. “I
knew very little
about it before, but I have developed a deep respect for the
institutions and
the people who work hard each day to make the system
function and do
justice.”
Reflecting on his
experience in the Bankruptcy Reaffirmation Clinic, Nathan has
been “consistently
impressed by the difference the volunteer lawyers can make
in the lives of the
people they represent. That has been very fulfilling for me.”
After three long
years in law school, Nathan likes to take a well-deserved break
by grabbing a meal
at Café Poca Cosa or by hanging out at home and catching
an episode of
Law & Order. He also tries to find time to go mountaineering,
compete in
triathlons and travel. After graduation, Nathan plans to practice
corporate law at
Shearman & Sterling, LLP in San Francisco. Hopefully, this
position will turn
out to be Nathan’s dream job which he describes as “something
really interesting
with an international angle.” The VLP wishes Nathan the best
of luck and is
grateful to have had him as a volunteer!
